And do you think that the "hate crime" statutes will be applied in this obvious case? Or do you think that it will be yet another case of black on white crime that gets swept under the rug while whites get the book thrown at them

It happened in Knoxville. If it happened in NYC, Boston or Washington D.C. it would have been on all of the TV news channels. It has nothing to do with sweeping things under the rug. It has to with the fact that the mid-Manhattan media folks think if you go west of the mall in Paramus, NJ you fall off the edge of the earth. And the American South to them brings flashbacks of the "Hee Haw" musical variety series.
As for it being prosecuted as a "hate" crime", doesn't all homicides reflect a momentary bit of hate? Give them all the death penalty for carrying out the murder with depraved indifference to human life. That's a sustainable legal principle.
