To calculate using pre decimal ( shows my age !!!)
it is
£960 + 960 shillings
at 20 shillings to the £ that means £960 + £48 a total of £1008

A guinea in pre-decimal currency was one pound and one shilling. Therefore, 960 guineas is 960 pounds and 960 shillings. As there were 20 shillings to the pound, this is equivalent to 960 + 960/20 pounds = 960 + 48 = 1008 pounds.

Indeed correct; one pound and one old shilling (thus £1.05 in the present form of currency).

Since 960*1.05 = 1008, the conversion leaves £1008 exactly.

£960 - £4.80 = £955.20
Edit: All these dudes have it wrong. You have to subtract the 5p from each guinea. EDIT: WHOOPS SORRY. I'VE GOT IT WRONG!!
