a family member died when it was of natural causes? I mean people who knew the person and cared about them sometimes don't know because the ill person's relatives keep them away. And I don't think it is being nosy when you care about someone, to wonder what they died of.

Actually it is nosy. When do people finally GET there privacy?

Yes, but again the family does have the right to privacy. I had a situation in our family several years ago similar to this. No one would talk about how my first cousin died. After a little checking, I found out she had died of HIV. So I just let the subject drop. We have never discussed it again within the family. I respect the privacy of my first cousins's family and respect their wishes. Just maybe, something devastating like this, is why the family does not open up. Just let the deceased rest in peace. Some things are best left alone.

Maybe sometimes the person wanted their health issues kept private? I know a man who got a certain type of cancer and only told about 5 people about it. He got cured, but I imagine that if he had died of it, he might not have wanted everyone to know.

Health is a very personal matter to some people.

It may be inappropriate to ask immediately after the death, as it will just remind the family of the possibel pain and suffering the person went through, and no, it's not really any one else's business.
