with my first child i told them i only wanted the gas but to ask befor its too late if i want an epidural, i got the stage where i asked for one and they said its too late, but they never asked befor that like i asked. he came out at 9 pound 2, which noone was expecting cause i was not overly big. i am proud that i managed a baby of that size with only the gas. i am thinking of doing the same thing only having gas but i want to know more about epidural experiences to help decide of a back up pain relief just in case. the idea of a needle into your spinal fluid scares me. epidural yes or no?

I LOVED MY EPIDURAL!!

My birthing teacher had told us all that it could take up to two hours from the time you ask for the epidural until you get it. So she said to gauge your pain and ask for it far enough ahead of time. My hospital wasn't busy that night, so I got mine right away. Then I went to sleep and didn't wake up until the nurse woke me up to push.

The whole "needle into your spinal fluid" wasn't too bad. The anesthesiologist applied a topical anesthesia first, so I didn't feel the needle. The pain relief was immediate and complete. It never wore off and I had no complications.

I would recommend an epidural to anyone. I wasn't afraid of the pain of child birth, but I wasn't really into feeling every part of it. It definitely numbed me. I didn't feel anything, not even pressure to push. I also didn't have any tearing or need any stitches. I'm not sure if that's because I was so relaxed from the epidural, or if I just got lucky.

I've never heard of gas. What kind of gas was it? What were the effects and possible dangers to the baby?

I had an epidural that lasted for a few hours then wore off by the time it came to start pushing. The actual insertion of the epidural is hard to describe....you feel a pinch when it goes through your skin, then an electric shock type of feeling when it pierces the epidural space. So not really painful, but an odd uncomfortable feeling. My daughter is due in 5 weeks and I plan on getting another epidural :) Hope I helped with your decision.

My first labour was a back labour and extremley painful. He was stuck and they had to use the ventouse to get him out. I had the epidural and was in heaven lol
My second labour, I went for 24hrs with no pain relief other than the gas (which sucks lol) then was rushed in for a c-section so epidural again.
I never had any problems with the epidural other than them working to well. They took alot longer to wear off and for some reason I was completely numb from shoulders down rather than waist down
. I was dead against having one when I first went in because my mum had scared me with horror stories of ending up paralysed etc etc but things like that happening are pretty rare
My friend had 3 failed epis. They tried 3 different times and it just didnt work.
Talk to you midwife about the pros and cons then decide from there

An epidural only helps with the contractions leading up to the pushing. When I actually pushed it out it did not make a difference. If you need it this time for the contractions then do it. If you want it for the actual delivery then don't bother. The needle itself was a cold pin prick and then it was over. I don't even like needles and it was the wimpiest one I ever had. The IV was 100 times worse.

It's hard for them to ask you at the "right moment" if you want the shot just before it's too late. They have a lot of work to do in assisting in your delivery.

If you're uncomfortable with the idea of the epidural, one solution I tried and recommend is taking the LeMaz class for natural childbirth. They teach you things you can do to assist in pain control during the delivery. Another thing you can do is learn self hypnosis so you can use it to block your feeling the pain of childbirth.

That way, you have ways to lessen the pains you felt if the next baby is large.

I personally would say no. I would say yes to pain meds though. My daughter had an epidural with both of her children, after the first one she had a lot of trouble with her left leg giving out. The second one she had in June and she's had a headache ever since.
So, I'm saying on the overall scheme of things labor doesn't last forever and you hung in there the first time!

Good Luck with the new baby!!!

Well I had an epidural with all 3 kids and i liked it because even when the contractions werent that bad it takes away the pain and gives you the time to relax and get you ready to push...with my second child though i had to wait to get it because the guy was doing c sections so when i got it i had already started pushing and i had no pain medication before so i felt everything...alot of the time now they say they can give the epidural until you are pushing...and that was the case i got mine in the mix of everything...but if you wait that long dont do it its really not worth it i learned because of course when you start pushing the pain goes away anyways...i was just really scared of ripping or being cut with him and i had neither...so if you can do without go for it...and with my third i got it really early again because i wanted to feel comfortable up to pushing....i just really like the relaxed time it gives me...but its really up to you and how you feel...Good Luck and i hope i helped out!!

Yes. Yes. Yes. Don't let anyone make you feel guilty for asking for the epidural. It gives you time to rest before you have to start pushing. You will not feel like you are too worn out to push. Get that epidural girl!!

Epi's are hard on your body and the baby.

Get a spinal morphine, it takes the pain away completely, but still leaves you with feeling in your legs so you can walk around and encourage labor to progress, a major issue with epis is labor slows down because you're stuck on your back.

Pluse with the spinal you can still have everything birth option open, even water birth.

i was in labor for 26 hours. thanks to the epidural i got to sleep some of the time i was in labor or else i wouldnt have had the energy for pushing.

then again if it went fine for you on gas, then its your option, they say second time goes faster then the first. (so im really counting on that being true.) personally i was in soo much pain i couldnt take it any longer, got the epidural at like noon one day and deliverd my daughter the next morning at 5.
