America is built for the automobile, highways and suburbs and meandering neighborhoods that aren't close to anything. You can't walk or ride a bike anywhere in America; mainly because it would be useless to try and walk 24 miles just to get to the nearest grocery store. So is this why America is such a fat country?

That's only one of the reasons. Another is the unhealthy diet which is easier than the healthy one. Snack foods and prepared dinners are generally higher in calories, and especially higher in fat than natural foods cooked properly. Also, much of the American population comes from gene pools that are geared to putting on weight against the cold of winter, or because their ancestors were peasants at hard physical labor to use up whatever they could eat. My own group, the Pennsylvania Germans, have an expression, "A fat wife and a full barn never did any man harm." The idea was fat meant prosperity, a fairly common primitive belief. Those were the successful ones who lived to breed, and whose children survived to breed.

Naturally skinny people are to a great extent descended from scholars and aristocrats who ate richer foods, did not do labor, and burned a high metabolism to fuel their brains. Their energy was used in dancing and aristocratic sports. And as we all know, any bastards they had with peasants (who generally were more roly poly when well fed) were not usually acknowledged, and fell into the lower classes.

It is a fact that until quite recently Europe and most of the rest of the world was as effectively divided along class lines as it was along racial lines. There was some mixing, but the bastards were treated as of the lower class. Or race, in the case of slaves.

American is fat because people are eating terrible food and not working out. A lot of this is because of the convenience of terrible food and Americans' habit of working too much. I don't think cars have a lot to do about it.

I think we are fat because of all the additives used in our food supply, to keep things fresher longer, or add taste. Have you googled any of the ingredients in foods to see their effect on the human body? Like Diet Pop... It's scary. We will probably die from diseases we haven't even heard of yet. Eat Organic!
