Someday there will be a 'land grab' for these deep sea resources, and now Russia has one more little thing to help them justify their claim. In the mean time Markymark is right; great PR scheme. Many of the "old powers" are trying to change the law of the sea they helped create. Spain for example wants to change long recognized international law so that Spanish treasure from sunken ships can only be claimed by them. Likewise fishing rights are always in dispute, Russia is just getting a foot in the door for the future carving up of the Ocean's floors

Russia might have managed to put a flag on the sea bed but they them self no that the UN needs to give them legal right to own the land but i don't think that UN will want to give them that knowing that America,Canada,Norway and Denmark will come storming through the doors of the UN demanding and explanation

If the Russians are so emphatic as to pursue their claim, It will end up in the world court for a decision
They have no more legitimate claim to the Arctic, than any other country that borders it.

Perhaps the US should claim the moon, after all it has placed a flag there with a real person. I doubt the Russians will get to far in the UN with their claim.

There is no land under the Arctic ice cap. The Russians claim that they put a marker on the sea bed, about 2 miles deep. The UN has already ruled that no one owns the seas.
I hope the Russians succeed in developing the oil fields. If we tried in the US, the Democrats, liberals, tree huggers, enviro weenies would do everything they could to prevent it. At least we can buy the oil.

who cares? They cant drill there yet. Deal with it when it happends. The UN will never recognise their claim based on the sinking of one flag underwater anyway. It would not suprise me if the Americans go down and nick it, What flag?
