I know rattlesnakes run in pairs always, but am not sure about other snakes. I'd love to know what kind of 6' black snake you found. What state are you in???

Here in TN we have a Black Racer that's a rat eater and safe. I've never heard of them traveling in pairs, but I think they also attack bad snakes. In GA the King Snakes kill rattlers.

usually a snake that gets into a house like that is a solitary snake- it could be a female looking for a safe place to give birth to live babies though. it's hard to say for sure without knowing what kind of snake it is. snakes will adapt behaviors to their locations just like any other animal. your best bet may be to call a local expert for identification of the snake and advice on getting the snake(s) out of the house.
