How is it that some people don't care about others? They could care less if something bad happened to somone, as long as it isn't them. What causes this? Is it a condition? Or is it simply the way they are (personality wise?)

Read "The Sociopath Next Door" by Dr. Martha Stout. It explains that 4% of the population are sociopaths, without a conscience or sense of guilt. It's scary stuff, but she tells you how to spot these people and how to deal with them.

Think about it. Isn't your idea about 'human life' being so special the result of way too many romance novels, and an overly-nurtured childhood? Did someone maybe convince you that you were 'special' in some way?
Not everyone shares such a well-shielded perspective after observing some hard and cold facts firsthand about this 'humanity' you seem to idealize so much.

all the above answers are right, i think.
i'll just add some other opinion..

it could also possible that the reason they care less if something bad happeded to someone, is because they're scared. in this case, the person isn't have no feeling at all, he/she are scared that he/she won't be able to control his/her feelings.
if he/she see something bad about others, he/she may "feel" it too and since it's a bad feeling, they rather care less.

Well, that is an opinion maybe they just don't regard the lives of certain humans. Hmm. Maybe they say to themselves no one cares about them and has no regard for them and they see no other way than to get rid of the problem. Maybe they see it as doing society a favor. I couldn't say. I don't make judgments I seek to understand. Society is funny in it's ways and one would expect the individual to reflect that. Nature and social conditioning clashes and sometimes you get pretty flowers and other times you get bloodbaths on CNN and they say to themselves...bling bling.

One word, Immaturity.

We all go through a phase of life in which we act as if the world was made specifically for our enjoyment. We react with anger when thing don't go our way and exhibit indifference to things that don't specifically impact us.

Most people grow out of this phase as they make the journey to adulthood and a more mature understanding of how the world works and their place in it. Unfortunately, some never make the journey.

I believe that people who don't care about others will have less feelings about themselve too. So, they will not enjoy their life because they don't have high spirit, less interaction with people. OR maybe they're having thier own personal problem , it maybe a social problem, you cound tell them how you feel.

I'd say personality and it has to do with how they were brought up as a child. i.e worst case scenerio a child growing up neglected with no friends will probably grow up to be a sociopath or a serial killer. It starts with family then education imo.

It all starts with public education, then our government and eventually it bleeds out into society. All part of the big plan.
