You must spend your money for the best brand.
As I know HP and Dell are the best in laptops for a long time and they are very reliable too. I trusted HP and I bought a HP laptop 2 years before, and still like the day I bought it. Didn't even have to service it at least once up to now.
I recommend you to buy a HP (with experience) or Dell laptop.
On www.hp.com you can even customize your laptop. And also you can check the price.

If you are not a US citizen then you should not be buying a laptop from the US.
Because if you do and it breaks (far too common with laptops) you won't be able to get it fixed where you are under warranty which means either paying for service or paying to ship it to the states for warranty service (the international warranty that "allows you to get it serviced anywhere in the world" only applies to US citizens if the laptop is bought in the US).
If it works fine throughout the warranty period then you get the lower price (though freight may erode the savings making it only worthwhile if there is a model only available in the US that you really want) while if it doesn't you get a nasty surprise when it breaks.
The power issue is minor, pretty much all laptop power supplies can handle anything that comes out of the wall so all you need is a plug adapter or a new power cord. The different modem may make it technically illegal for you to hook your laptop up to the phone network where you are but that's not likely to be that much of a problem, in practice if you're not causing problems for the phone network no one will care.

there are some problems that might occur when u buy a computer form another country. One being that the power outlet is different and can not be pluged into Australian out lets another is freight is extreamly expensive on fragile packages and i might still break and that your have to go about travel warranty which is a pain. another obvious is currency conversion.
The best way to buy a laptop or any computer is through your origional country.
The cheapest Australian site to buy a laptop form is Scorpion Technology which can be found at www.scorptec.com.au they are a wholesaler which sell your above laptops and are do not try to palm sh!t off to you. I personally brought a laptop from there a year ago and it is still going strong no problems.
Cheers.. Hope this helps !!

My recomendation HP.Disadvantage of buying from USA-U will not get a international warrenty, most electronic products are provided with warrenty within USA only. Advantage--The prices for laptop are the lowest in USA.Try buying from Best buy or Circuit city. Best buy do provide a warrenty U can purchase(Geek squad) but not much use if U R bringing the laptop back in India. We have HP service centers in India of course, which U can avail .

Dell and Toshiba are also good choices. Sony is good but a bit overpriced. HP DV6000T has gotten several awards for price/performance. Depends what you want in a laptop. Dell has quite a few options for building your own.

How about $1250 and u can get a Mac, which is better than any Sony or HP out there. eBay has new and slightly used models for less money

Since Toshiba makes the best laptops, you should get a Toshiba Satellite M65-S9092.
