Its a very interesting question which has probably been asked by the all of the best minds in history.
Philosophy, Religion and Science all come up with different answers... and everyone may have a different opinion because we just don't know the answer yet.
When (and if ever) we do know the answer then we will probably then know why we are all here (if there is a reason) and how the universe got here and we will probably meet our 'god' (by 'god' i mean the force or intelligence that created the universe, if there is any)
so if you find an answer to your question then you have probably found the answer to life, the universe, god and everything.
By the way, the answer to that is '42' in the excellent book The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy' - its a fantastic book, i really recomend it, it's a fictional book, not factual, but it's a really easy & entertaining read and it is full of philosophical thought)
one scientific theory is that before the big bang, there was nothing at all... no space, no time, no thoughts, nothing... but then if there was no time, then there could not be a 'before' because time started at the time of the big bang.
There are also other scientific theories. One is that the univierse is continuously expanding and contracting, which means that the universe had just finished contracting before it started expanding again at the big bang... in other words, there was a similar universe before this one which has just collapsed. Another theory is that there are multiple parallel universes which all exist at the same time and many of these would have existed before our universe came into existance.
Another interesting and similar question to yours is "What was the universe like before i was conceived?"
Before we were conceived (as far as we were concerned at the time), there was no universe, and no time... and if we had never been born, we would never have been aware of anything, so, for us, the universe would never have existed... we would never have become aware of it all (or would we?!?) (and if we had not been born, would the universe have existed without us?!?)
For myself, when i ask myself these sorts of questions, i use a combination of religious thought (although i don't believe in any particular religion, i still find them interesting), buddhist meditation, science (including quantum physics) and thoughts about love and compassion, to help me bring more meaning into my existence.
But the real answer is that we just dont know, and the answer is often a matter of personal belief, or faith.
good luck on your quest for answers and please let me know if you find an answer!

There are various theories about this. I have a book titled "The Oscillating Universe" that says the Universe expands to a certain extent and then contracts again, so that we have a cycle of Big Bangs and Big Crunches. A variation is the "Damped Oscillating Universe" that says each Big Bang is less energetic than the previous one, so that eventually there will not be sufficient energy for another Big Bang. Isaac Asimov had an interesting theory he called "4 Leaf Clover". It is rather complex to explain to try to explain briefly here. Check his book "Science, Numbers & I".

Before the big bang there was nothing, maybe a pre-incident.
A pre-incident would have to have a finite aspect to it or it would forever remain a pre-incident.
The pre-incident had to have a potential to have a beginning.
The potential produced a single space-time pulse of minimum size and duration and launched this universe on it's present course.
The nothing after an incident is an infinite nothing.
When the incident runs it's course it will never occur again.

Well, I am a Christian person, but I will not bring God into my opinion because you asked me not to. I would have to say that nothing was happening before the world was created. I have no proof or website for my answer, however, could anyone write about the day before they were born? They could do a lot of research on what happened the day before their date of birth, but would not know 100% of everything that happened. So using that as an example, know one is going to know for sure, and if they say they do, then they are either making it up or lying. Hope this helps you out.

We can not say nothing exist before Big Bang but we can say something the ultimate power which created the universe was only exist as not-active.
It is not the Big Bang which created the universe, the creation of the universe is in continuous cycle. So there is no beginning no end.

it really depends one what you believe in.
Our current theory only covers right to a short moment after big bang, what happens before that, we don't know. But keep in mind that just because our theory doesn't explains it, it doesn't meant that there's no before. There is a before, we just don't know what it was.
But in the M-theory, or superstring theory, it says that big bang is a result of two membrane (each parallel universe is attach to a single membrane) lying parallel to each other, they collided as they are floating in a multiverse system. This collision energy causes big bang. That means, our universe was already there all along, it just collided with a parallel universe and create a big bang.
But then again string theory itself is still unproven. It's up to you to believe it or not.

This question can't be answered from current knowledge, nobody has a clue what was there before the singularity of the big bang appeared.

I have just began reading a book by Bill Bryson called a short history of nearly everything. it has a large section at the beginning devoted to the many theories that exactly answer your question. Hope it helps

There no "before" the Big Bang..... That was the moment when our time continuum started. Before the Big Bang there was no time....

it is called the big bang
so obviously there were little bangs
"the" shows it's the only big bang
but big is a comparison if it is big there had to be small
for every to there is a fro
