Also what is the difference between wifi and just using your desktop pc wirelessly?

I dont think my question is being understood. I know I can get a wireless router to get a wireless connection. Let me give an example of what I am talking about. You know when you go into a STARBUCKS and you have your wireless card in your laptop, and you just sit down and you have internet access. I want to know, if there is a way to do that at home without a physical router?

You may be able to find a long range wifi provider in your area, but the service is NOT reliable. In most cases, they mount an antenna on your roof, and it will go down if the wind blows hard. Stick to a wireless router in your home, you'll get better performance.

Starbucks have a physical router in the back. Their setup is identical to what you use at home for wireless networking. If you didn't have a router where would your PC connect to wirelessly?

If you subscribe to one of the cellular providers wireless services you can indeed have wireless in your home without any other broadband services. (Often called 3g service) In some locations you can also find a WiSP (wireless internet service provider) which will connect your home wirelessly to the internet. Check local papers, or search for wireless internet and your city name.

Both of these will be more expensive than DSL or cable service! Wireless normally only works very short distances so to provide the service these companies have to setup many access points and then connect all those to the internet.
The cellular companies and the WISP's use higher power and large radio towers to position antennas that can go further.

Hope that helps.

Yes.... you just need two things...
1) A Wireless router, ask for 802.11b or 802.11g
2) A wireless card for your laptop (smaller) or desktop (will be larger)

Wifi is just a access mechanism.... it uses radio waves for transmission and reception. Like wifi there are other wireless mechanisms also... like bluetooth, infra-red and wimax (new) to name a few.

Accessing the desktop PC wirelessly means any of the above mechanisms being used to transmit or receive data to and from the PC at any time.

yeas. have you tried turning on your laptop/pc/whatever and if you have a wireless card then you should see if there are any available networks in your area as well as the signal strength.
the difference between WI-FI(WIreless-FIdelity) and using your PC wirelessly is only the provider (ISP) you will be using. using your pc wirelessly in your home is using your ISP if you connect to a wireless network that you pick up around your house then you will be accessing the web through a different provider. unless both happen to be the same. good luck hope this helps

First you need to have a wi-fi card in your labtop, which you probably have if the labtop is new. Then you need to buy a wireless router. I suggest you buy a Linksys router, that should cost around 50 bucks. If you call the customer service of Linksys, they should help you set everything up. Just make sure you tell them whatever they ask because that is essential..Good Luck

If you subscribe to a broadband service you can get a wireless router. Do not connect to any external open wireless connections as this is illegal and can carry a prison sentence.
