I think dragons represent the most powerful being imaginable.
The reason I feel this way is that I have researched them for some time now.
It amazes me that people are so quick to dismiss the idea of the existence of dragons solely based on the lack of evidence when dragons myths have existed on several continents before there was communication between them. To the oriental people they were powerful spirits and guardians of Nature. The European dragons were something to be feared and it wasn't until Christianity that they were considered evil and to be killed by this saint or that one.

Some Chinese locals believe that the fossils discovered on mountain tops belong to dragons. Furthermore some traditions believe that these ground up bones/fossils have a mystical power and are used in medicines, even today.
Why Dragons? Perhaps, people could not figure out how these huge bones got way up high on the mountain tops. It may have been imagined that these creatures had to fly. These intimidating creatures surely made an impact on people. Even now we go wild just thinking of what can happen to our society if a massive beast like that was released into the wold as we know it. Just take a look at our movies, Godzilla, Jurassic Park, The Host, Etc.
What about the Knight that slayed the Dragon? The dragon was always in a cave or mountain. Erosion exposes the fossils and people create stories about them.

(1) Ultimate power bound with ageless wisdom
(2) Read to many fantasy novels
(3) I watched a documentary narrated by Patrick Stewart about the existence of dragons in the past. It claimed and i dont necessarily believe it. That they have discovered the bones of a dragon (not dinosaur). But that would have made front page news.

3.I wouldn't force a dragon to fly, as some people suggest. I would go if it wished, but coerce is cruelty.
