Hi there bumumblebee, I have alot of people like this at work too. The thing is that you have to come to terms with the fact that you work with these people and you are going to have to see them everyday. You just need to look at it from a positive perspective. You will need to get to know them and 'show' an interest in what they have to say. You may find that you get to like some of them. We cant like everyone all of the time, and there are a couple of people at my work that I positively do not like. However, instead of letting it get me down, I get my acting mask on (if you see what I mean), and I just be nice and polite to them. I 'show' an interest in what they have to say and it gets you through the day. This is called being sociable and learning the art of 'small talk.' Yes it is banal and rubbish, but make a concerted effort and it works. If you have a positive attitude towards people, it just makes life easier for you.

Maybe by spending a little time listening to them first you will be able to identify their interests and find something that you feel you can relate to. People surprise me all the time, first impressions are not always accurate, you may find that the majority of people you are talking about don't really want to talk about the weather etc either but make the effort to communicate in order to make a connection on some level with you. Try to keep an open mind and you may end up making really good relationships with people you never thought you would.

Hi. I can really relate to your question because I have been in this situation many times. I don't care for small talk about rubbish either. Perhaps you could take charge of the conversation and ask them something like "what do you think about ......global warming, transport in other parts of the world, the design of some new building, etc. Ask a specific question and you should get a specific answer. It may also lead to real conversation rather than 'small talk'. You might find that once you get past the small talk that you do actually have something in common with one of these people. Good luck with it.

This may not be the answer you are looking for but for someone who used to think the way you are. You have to first realize that you are at work "to work not to make friends". Over the years, I have come to realize that the less people know about your personal life the better off you are. Some people like myself prefer to engage in these "small talks" just to be friendly not "to be a friend". I really hope I am not misinterpreting your question but girl, have you ever been at work when a friendship with a coworker has gone sour? trust me, you don't want to be the one who is being talked about. Neither do you want to be in an environment where there is tension.
Go to work 'to work". Be friendly you don't have to be a friend... well it would be nice to have even one or two........ but keep work professional.

Try this:"When you are in a group photo, who's face do you look for first?"
Of course - yours!
Same with everyone else.
Like everything you get good by DOING it, but helps if you get some good advise.
Check in bookshops and Amazom.co.uk (or .com) for books on conversation techniques, how-to-sell books, "art" of small talk. Read them, DO them, etc etc....
You never know what you may find out about people (:
Good luck and NICE talking to you .

If you really don't care, then they probably won't want to relate to you either.
