first to answer shroomy's question of what could stop the earth from rotating. Eventually the earth will stop rotating as a result of the moon tugging on it or at least that is what i have have learned. As for the main question, if it stopped gradually then there would still be severe weather conditions which could be catostrophic, but they would appear to be getting worse and worse untill the earth has reajusted to it new envirnment. If it stoped instantly, then just about every thing on earth would go flying be cause we would still be moving at the speed the earth was rotating. This would probably cause a title wave as a result along with extremely bad weather.

Sorry to answer a question with a question, but what method caused the earth to stop? Was there some huge chunk of magnetic rock that passed just a bit to close to earth to throw off the magnetic fields of our own planet? If so did the earth slowly stop or come to a screeching halt? Too many questions to really give an accurate answer, but in short, if it did stop rotating mass chaos would insue.

If the earths stops rotating these are the consequences:
1. a permanent daytime or night time on some parts of the world
2. the global winds that are affected by corioli's effect will be affected
3. formation of weather disturbances like typhoons, cyclones and tornadoes will also be affected since the rotation of a storm is affected also by the rotation of the earth
4. It will also affects the law of relativity and motion of objects on earth

Then day time and night time each will last for six months on the earth. In course of some of thousands of years, one side of the earth may get locked with the sun just like one side of the moon is presently locked with the earth(( we are always seeing one side of the moon only whereas the other side of the monn is invisible to us permanently)and in that case one side of the earth will have daylight permanently and the other side will have night time permanently. Then you can imagine what the consequence will be.

Chaotic whether conditions would make the surface of the earth virtually uninhabitable.
