My wife and I are partial to the MGM Grand. It is close to the airport, has direct access to the Monorail, and has wonderful rooms. We also like the casino (the largest in the city).
Everyone has their favorite though. I think as long as you stay at one of the major ones, you can't go wrong. On your first trip, try to visit other hotels to see if you might want to stay there.
You might also visit the web site below and click on the various links to the hotels. Lots of them give you video tours of their room. For example, you can check out the MGM Grand rooms at http://www.mgmgrand.com/accommodations/
by clicking on each type.
No matter where you stay, I hope you have a great time.

I've been going to Vegas since I was a little girl (grew up in So. Cal) so I can tell you, alot of hotels come and go, but one of the old time hotels that's still the BEST is Caesar's Palace! It's central location, Forum shops, the beautiful and very interesting Shadow Bar and nightclubs like PURE, great service and wonderful rooms, there's really no comparison, this is the place to stay!

My wife and I have been to Vegas several times over the past six years or so, including our honeymoon, staying in different places.
Mandalay Bay was wonderful, with its wave pool and classy rooms, but very pricey. A place I'd highly recommend, but only if you have the bucks to spend.
Excalibur was decent for a single night, mostly due to its convenient proximity to the airport, but not a place I'd choose to stay for several days.
Treasure Island was great, gave us the best room and service of any strip hotel we'd ever stayed in, and its central location on the strip let us go pretty much anywhere we wanted, quickly.
We had problems staying at the Luxor...it was rather nice in decorum but whatever cleaner they used on the rooms was very strong and gave us some allergic reactions.
By far the best place we've stayed was the Golden Nugget in the downtown area...total luxury in many ways for a very reasonable price, and will be our hotel of choice whenever I travel back. Again, its central location downtown pretty much let us go anywhere, and it was conveniently located next to Girls of Glitter Gulch, the best strip bar experience we've had.

Wow, very tough question....but I would say either Bellagio, Wynn, The Hotel, Venetian, Caesars.
But ones that I would avoid would be any in downtown...it's really sketchy and you'll notice the difference.
Also nice, on the strip, are TI, Luxor, Paris, NY NY, MGM

Only been once, but i can recommend against staying at the Monte Carlo. Paper thin walls, uncomfortable beds and used-by-their-date pillows.
Wynn looks amazing.

We just stayed at the Luxor and it was amazing... Only thing about it was I didn't like the beds. They were really uncomfortable. But maybe that was by design... to get you to stay out in the casino longer! Have a good time!
