I notice Dell charges a $9.95 fee for making online payments on your Dell Preferred Account. What's the $9.95 fee for if I'm paying a payment online from my checking account !

You just answered your own question. Yes it's a rip off. Dell prays on people they think are too dumb to handle computers on their own and therefore too dumb to realize they are being ripped off.

When a company charges a fee for making EFT (electronic funds transfer) payments, whether online or phone, its usually to cover the charge they're charged from the company they use to do the EFT. I use to work in collections and we used Western Union for EFTs and we had to charge $15 per transaction. The charge wasn't just because we wanted extra money, its because we're charged for using the Western Union service.

They got'cha... if you need and more convincing.. how about a gig of RAM off their site for $700.. Used motherboard out of old 8250 system for $260...
