the 5 is for speed merchants. Its a straight shot into LA with very little to see or do. go down the coast or on the old road if you want to see some sights. Big Sur, Monterey Bay, Santa Barbara, Hurst Castle, Solvang are just some of many great things to do on Highway 1 or the 101 going south. But... you get there really fast on the 5!!!
Edit:
No offence Tonale 1 and Sfgfan but Solvang and Andersons are not on route 5 they are on the 101.

If you have time to waste take 1 or 101. You will not be disappointed.
I used to go between San Diego and Santa Cruz a couple of times a month...usually took the 5 (1 - 101 - 46 - 5) because it's fast. A few times I had some extra time so I TRIED to take 1 all the way down. It was challenging without a map and a GPS, but it was rewarding as anything.
Do yourself a favor and take 1/101

I've driven this route many times as I grew up in southern and northern california. I-5 is pretty bland, but there are two stops you can make. Anderson's Split Pea Soup is actually kind of a cool stop (as cool as it gets on the 5!) and is tasty. Of course, if you're into steaks, then you can't be Harris's ranch a little further south.
Hope this helps!

If you like Tommy's, there's one in Valencia along with a Brazilian BBQ place. Highway 5 is great, the coast may be pretty, but it takes forever to get to LA that way.

Highway 5 to put it simply, sucks...there's nothing to see and nothing to do. Just a bunch of cheap hotels and fast food chains. If you drive real fast it will take you 5 hours so you don't have to stop anywhere, cept maybe at an in and out along the way for a quick meal...

About the only things right on I-5 are some theme restaurants/gift-shops. For example, if you like pie, there's The Apricot Tree, at exit 368 (north of the Coalinga exit).

If you are wondering about where to stay, we have driven from SF to LA many times. We always find a motel (and have dinner) in Bakersfield because it's before you go over the Grapevine and I used to live in the Central Valley. Then you will be rested and ready to drive the Grapevine the next morning. LA always has heavy freeway traffic, especially commute hours are bad.
