Actually Mars will not be close to Earth at all this August. That myth got started in 2003, when Mars did come unusually close to Earth on August 27, 2003. But it did not look like the Moon, it only looked like a bright star. Mars never gets close enough to Earth to look as big as the Moon. Back in 2003 someone said you would be able to see Mars with a telescope about as well as you can see the Moon without a telescope, but the some news media "forgot" to mention the telescope part. This myth has been repeated every summer ever since.

This is rubbish, missing important information and four years out of date.

On August 27th 2003 Mars made its closest approach to Earth, when it came within 34.65 MILLION miles. It was indeed very bright, but still just looked like a star. If you used a telescope, however, Mars looked as big in the scope as the full Moon does to the naked eye.

This B.S. rumour has been around for a while now. It is total Hogwash !!
I'd like to get my hands on the idiot that started this nonsense.
Mars is in the sky right now, and easily visible after midnight. It is tiny, and you need a good sized Telescope to even tell that it is a planet. And it will stay that way.!!! As a matter of fact, since it is so close to the Horizon this year, it is hard to see any surface detail even with a telescope because of the atmospheric haze so close to the horizon.
The only thing special about the month of August is that it marks the closest approach of Mars for this year. That's it!!!!
Sorry to disappoint you folks.
If you lived near my house, I'd invite you over to come look for yourself.

Um...excuse me????????? 34.65 MILES??? I think you forgot MILLIONS!!! Try 34.65 MILLION miles, and this event I believe was in the year 2003. But regardless, it is a treat to watch the stars should the night be clear.

Happy star gazing.
