I would remove money from politics. No more PACs. Campaigns would be equally financed through public funding. Negative campaigning would be outlawed.
Politicians would have to undergo a complete public interview process and present an outline for what they intend to accomplish.
Congress would have to poll their constituents regularly and act accordingly.
This is supposed to be a representative government, run from the bottom up not the opposite like it has become.
The laws regarding ownership of the press and media outlets would be restored to their former limits. News organizations would be required to post both sides of opinion on the issues or none at all.
I think that peoples mentalities would change if our government was responsive to what America needs and not so much the rest of the world. If people felt that their vote actually mattered would be a good start.
I think that being straight and honest with Americans would go a long way to regain their trust and enthusiam.
I would put and end to fear mongering and get people to realize that we are not a people of extremes on the left and the right. Most of us live in the middle and have a lot in common. Some issues will never be resolved to everyones satisfaction, so we need to focus more on what we can move forward with and find compromises for the others.

First thing to do is to significantly increase the pay of the armed forces. That would permit doing the second necessary thing, which is to increase the size. The military is overtaxed by the Iraqi mess, and there aren't enough resources left over to effectively deal with North Korea or Iran, should it become necessary. Third thing would be to make the Bush tax cuts permanent, and fourth would be to establish private investment accounts as an alternative to Social Security. (If I had had such an account, I would be wealthier by over $750,000.)

There is so much I don't know where to start.
-Flat 20% tax(10% for government, 10% for education)
-Strengthen our military
-Secure our borders
-Find and Deport all illegals
-Get rid of HOA's(I hate them)
-Bring the Pledge back to schools
-Legalize weed and tax it just like tobacco and alcohol
-Pedophiles would automatically get the chair
-Minimize big business out sourcing
-Allow parents to dicipline their children without fear of being labled a child abuser.
-Make it mandatory that anyone over the age of 65 has to renew their drivers licence every 6 months.
-Make it mandatory that all big businesses provide onsite childcare.
-Flat 4% interest rates for all home loans. (everyone deserves a house)
There is more, but those stick out right now.

Repeal laws and rulings that are not defined by the constitution, and let the states decide..(Roe. V. Wade) (No Child Left Behind.)(Legalize Pot.) But at the same time instill laws that grant every body the rights to "Life, Liberty, and Freedom of Happiness." (Gay Rights) (No Death Penalty)
And then...buy a small isle off the coast of england, with a house. And then, appoint a general election to re instill democracy- And then flee the country before a wild pack of conservatives hunt me down....

1) Start over looking at the Constitution, and make sure we are following it completely, point by point.
2) Make it a rule that the CEO of a company may make no more than 10 times the salary (plus benefits) of the lowest-paid person in the business.
3) Assure all Americans all necessary: food, health care, shelter, education, jobs.

As complete and total ruler of the U.S., I would force the media to be responsible in their reporting. They would have to be more fair and balanced. For example entities like the New York Times would not only publish negative stories about the war in Iraq, but all the wonderful and inspirational stories about how we have made massive improvements in the lives of the people, many of whom only have schools and working sewage because of our efforts.
Back when JFK was President, the media was more restrained and policed itself. It was common knowledge by those who covered the White House that JFK was having an affair with Marilyn Monroe, but the newspapers did not print these allegations. Imagine if, during the Cuban Missile Crisis, the New York Times decided to boost circulation by printing lurid headlines about JFK's trysts with Marilyn. As it was, JFK was living on pain medication and sleeping pills. If he had a media scandal to contend with, his attention would have been severely distracted, and he likely would have made some disastrous choices. The Cuban Missile Crisis could easily have ended in a catastrophic war.
Obviously, the media has to stop "dogging" the President. What they did to Clinton was unforgivable, and may explain why he didn't do more to combat terrorism. Just fighting all the scandals and doing damage control was a full time job.
Once the media promised to act responsibly, we'd have much better candidates for public office. No one wants their personal life and that of their entire family exposed. Hence, we only get candidates with very bland personal lives, not the best people for the job.
Next, we would start emphasizing personal responsibility. Having a child out of wedlock that requires public tax dollars to support would be a source of shame. No more strident, entitlement-demanding welfare mommas.
Finally, school children would have to take old-fashioned civics class to learn about the principles upon which our country was founded, and to be versed in current events. If we had people who really understood our government and our Constitution, the numbers of the far Left would dwindle to a few disgruntled kooks.
Here is what I would ban:
1) Duplicitous shrews like Hillary Clinton.
2) Cancellation of any tv show with a babe like Jeri Ryan.
3) Temperature in shopping malls above 67 degrees.
4) Deranged loons like Al Franken from holding public office.
5) Idiots like SFO City Manager Alberto Sandoval from working in a capacity higher than the fry station at McDonalds
6) Ugly, boxy glass skyscrapers that show no innovation
7) Welfare mommas from having more than one child
8) Bad drivers from possessing a drivers license
9) Immigrants who want the U.S. to change to suit their preferences, instead of assimilating
10) Michael Moore movies from receiving the classification of "documentary"
11) American fast food restaurants from polluting the eating habits in other countries with overseas locations.
12) Martin Luther King Day. That should be reserved for Presidents. It would be replaced with Ronald Reagan Day, aka Cold War Victory Day.
13) Phony weight loss drugs
14) Paris Hilton from procreating.
15) TV networks from highlighting only American Olympic athletes, and always presenting some sad tale (complete with violins) of how they had to overcome almost cartoonish hardship and adversity to get there.
16) Baby harp seal clubbing.
17) CEO's from making more than 100 times that of the average worker.
18) Illegal immigration
19) Contracts or tenure for sub-standard school teachers.
20) The media from acting irresponsibly, such as the New York Times publishing stories that severely hamper our ability to fight terrorism.

Anyone that truly shows hate in this Country (Without Limiting Free Speech) would be thrown out immediately.
I'd throw out all ridiculous gun control laws. If you were a criminal or crazy, then you cannot own a firearm, and thats the only law I would have in effect.
Would develop a new Tax System to less complicate things for my citizens.
Abortion would be illegal.
Media would be prohibited from entering a war zone.
I would allow the advertisement of Tobacco products back in the media.
I'm an awesome president.
