So - I want to know - what cartoon movies of Disney are completely original? Here are some I'm not sure about.
Dumbo
The Aristocats
The Fox And The Hound
Oliver & Company
The Great Mouse Detective
The Lion King
Mulan
Treasure Planet
Atlantis: The Lost Empire
Did any of these come from a book or short story Disney snatched up and turned into a film?
Thanks!

If you could find the author of the book a cartoon was based on that would be great!
I do know Bambi - the book was by Felix Salten

If anyone wants to add a book that was turned into a Disney film - go ahead! Could be helpful to someone. My reason for the question was to create a list of books that were used as Disney films anyway!
I'll start:
-The Rescuers by, Margery Sharp
- The Hundred and One Dalmations by, Dodie Smith
-Alice in Wonderland by, Lewis Carroll
-Pinocchio by, Carlo Collodi
by the way - thanks for all your answers, all helpful! :)

The first Disney animated movie that was a completely original story was Lion King. All movies prior to Lion King were based on either a book, a short story, a fairly tale or a legend.
Of the list you gave.
Dumbo was based on a book Helen Aberson and illustrated by Harold Perl
The Aristocats based on a short film titled "Gay Purr-ee"
The Fox and the Hound based on the book by Daniel P. Mannix
Oliver and Company was loosely based on "Oliver" by Charles Dickens
The Great Mouse Detective was loosely based on Sherlock Holmes by Aurthur Conan-Doyle
The Lion King was an original story (as I said above)
Mulan was based on Chinese historical events and legends
Treasure Planet was based on Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson
Atlantis: The Lost Empire was also an original story (but it came after Lion king, so it was not the first).

The Fox and the Hound is a book by Daniel Pratt Mannix IV.
Atlantis is based off a Greek legend.
The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad is by Washington Irving.
The Brave Little Toaster is by Disch, which was in a magazine called The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction.
Dumbo is by Helen Aberson.
And Lion King was based off a movie called Kimba the White Lion or Jungle Emperor Leo by Tezuka Osamu.
As far as I know Aristocats, Lady and The Tramp, and The Emperor's New Groove are the only one's you listed that weren't based on a movie, show, book, or legend(but I'm not going to say they're completley original =P). The rest were already listed, no point in writing it again.
By the way, if you'd like, you and I can make a list of a bunch of Disney movies that are based on books, etc. and ones that aren't. It seems like something that could take up some time and be a little helpful to someone.

To be honest, all that you have listed have either come directly from a book or are linked to a book (story and / or characters changed a bit). As far as I am aware, you might find one or two of the Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse cartoons are original and not based on books. Pluto is another one that will not be based on a book. The give away, for most Disney films, is if any character or event has a place in history, it's come from a book. If any character or event is linked to a nursery rhyme, fairy tale etc. it's from a book.

Not including CG films by Pixar, I think "Bambi" was an original
"The Lion King" is eerily similar to a 1960's Japanese animated film, "Kimba the White Lion" (directed by Tezuka Osamu), although it might be merely a coincidence than a direct rip-off
"Oliver & Company" is basically a spin on Charles Dicken's "Oliver Twist"
"Mulan" is based loosely on the Chinese legend, "Hua Mulan"
"The Great Mouse Detective" is based off of Eve Titus' children's book "Basil of Baker Street". The character Basil imitates Sherlock Holmes in many ways

Oliver & Company- Oliver Twist
The Great Mouse Detective- Sherlock Holmes
Mulan- A Chinese FairyTale
Treasure Planet- Treasure Island
Disney turnes characters into animals or slightly changes the story.
