Anything that your body absorbs will go to your baby whilst breastfeeding. I don't know exactly what Vicodin is but from the name it appears to be a Codein based analgesic (pain killer). If that's the case, it is vitally important to stick to the dosage recommended. If possible, you should reduce the dosage whenever you can as much of the Codeine will go into your baby, not enough to cause any problems now but if the baby is getting a regular shot of painkillers, it can become addicted to it and therefore, you will have a problem when you stop the Vicodin as the baby will withdraw. The other potential problem is if you decide to change the feed to bottle rather than breast. The baby will always want to latch onto you for it's shot of Codeine. If the baby appears to be getting too relaxed, docile, sleeps a lot etc. see the doctor and try to get something milder.

Vicodin is a common pain reliever given to new moms following a C-section. When used as prescribed, it shouldn't harm the baby at all. Although some of it will pass thru the breastmilk, about the only effect it will have on the baby is drowsiness. If you have any questions, you should call your baby's doctor. If the hospital you delivered at has a Lactation Nurse you can ask them as well. The Lactation Nurses are usually more up to date on medications than the pediatricians are.

if you take more than what is directed your baby could become even more sleepier. i was advised by a lactaion consultant and certified nurse that i should take ibuprofen one dose then vicodin the next time and switch back and forth.
