I'm really confused. Enlighten me. I didn't even know there was a Japanese zodiac. I'm guessing that's how it happened. Btw, I'm talking about the 12 animals.

Yes, we did. Chinese culture used to give great impacts to neighbors, like Japan, Korea, Vietnam, a part of Russia etc. Then, Chinese 12-animal zodiac were imported as well.

However, to be interesting, some countries uses a slightly different one. I mean, for example, C, J and K doesnt have "cat" in 12 animals, but Vietnam or Thai have it. I have no idea why though.

Absolutely same, and even today Japanese people are initiating to their kids old chinese story of 12 animals. They love Chinese stories as still making films based on those stories.

The Chinese zodiac is ancient and a few religions have also incorporated it, including the Japanese.
The Chinese calendar makes more sense than the calendar we follow anyway.
