I'm a Christian. I'm also an avid music lover. It drives me CRAZY when ppl tell me they can't get into a band just cause they are christian. Most of the Christian bands I listen to really rock, (they include Pillar, POD, Reliant K, Red, DC Talk, Skillet and hip hop artist Toby Mac) and are just as good if not better than their secular counter parts...so why is music not as good just cause its Christian?

To really get into a song/band, a person has to identify well with the lyrics. So when non-religious people or people of other religions listen to Christian music, they have a difficult time identifying with what the song is saying. What is the likelihood that you would find yourself swooning over a Satanic death/black metal band because the music is good?

Don't take it personally, people like music they can relate to. If you think lyrics don't count, then why do you listen to Christian music? Chances are that you don't (or don't want to) relate to a lot of the non-uplifting language and spiritual chaos in secular pop music.

Aside from that, keep in mind that Christian pop/rock/r&b etc. isn't really a genre, but an attempt to attach Christian lyrics to a genre that developed without it. As such, there can never be any innovation, nor is there much room for originality. That would risk breaking ground for a new genre, and would simply be off the mark. But that is also why non-Christians tend to find the music boring after awhile. If more Christian bands become mainstream AND innovative, perhaps the prejudice will fade. I believe that might require a little more egotism than most Christians would think is appropriate or advisable.

i have a limited experience with christian music but depending on the genre it can sound exactly the same. for example there are screamo/hardcore bands that call themselves christian bands and sound exactly the same as those bands who call themselves gothic bands. the only difference, i guess, is the lyrical content but personally I'm not too concerned with lyrics so i suppose i shouldn't feel differently towards a christian or secular band. however, hearing lord this jesus that all the time can get pretty annoying especially if you dint subscribe to the same religion as the band you're listening to. why is it that the secular bands dint constantly sing about not being christian whereas the christian bands have to always sing about being christian?

Non-Christians typically don't like Christian music because, like it or not, it really just tries to emulate secular music. Some people don't like listening to a recruiting tool for somebody else's religion, becuase that's what it is. Since Christian music is used as praise and worship, and not as entertainment, people don't get into it. If all Christian music was as cool as Norman Greenbaum's "Spirit in the Sky," maybe people would listen to it more.

amen brother
i feel the same way
most of the bands that are "christian" sound just like the other bands out there and also some people feel that if it isn't worshiping Jesus it's worshiping Satan which isnt true... for the most part anyways some bands DO worship Satan but not all rock bands that are secular are nessarciarlly "satanic" just because they're not christian

its the same reason people will only listen to music if its christian. ive seen tons of questions asking "what are some good christian bands; i only like christian bands;ect, ect" and that bugs me. but maybe some people arent christian and/or they dont like the message these bands are trying to send and/or they dont like how a bands faith has to have such a big impact on a band. finally, many people think (myself included; note this is MY OPINION) that christian bands are restricted and arent/cant be as creative because so many things are go against their faith.

that or maybe some peoplejust dont like the bands cause they think their not talented?

I'm not religious but I like christian rock bands like Stryper from the 80's. As of all music, I listen to the "melody".

I'm also a Christian and I agree with you. I think some people are being Judgemental. To tell you the truth, I love listening to Christian music because they have powerful messeges. Over all, I think some people are just being judgemental because they don't listen to the lyrics.

As a catholic, i like some christian artist but some could be hypocrites. I just don't like guys like those who say "Jesus this Jesus that" like David Crowder or Chris Tomlin. POD on the other hand, sings about God without mentioning his name which is real christian. But then, I like "secular" music like Linkin Park and Nine Inch Nails (I know you guys would hate this).

hehe, doesn't make sense huh! I love POD and Reliant K. I'm into alot of different music. My favorite Christian singers are Jaci Velasquez and Crystal Lewis.

My daddy taught me to listen to the "words" of a song before you make your assumption on it. I agree. This is how I've come to love all kinds of music.
