My question should be "What makes a warrior want to fight?"

the answer is yes to all the things you said and more.

Everybody is different and therefore everybody has a reason as to why they do the things they do. A lot of people need to prove themselves. Others get a high from combat whether is the wielding of a cutlass at high seas or in the deepest darkest jungle in the middle of nowhere. Others crave the attention and fame. A lot of people want to be famous. One way is to be a warrior. I mean if you have a pretty face and are not camera shy then you can be a tv personality. However, being the worlds boxing champion is a totally different thing. Not many people can be that. So there is a lot of recognition for that. A lot of people crave this recognition for being the best. Other people have a sence of duty. This is their motivation to fight fiercely. Then there is the darkside. Some people just like hurting people. So, is a little bit of everything.

the warrior is an archetype. others are hero, magician, sage. the warrior is the part of any person that will use force to eliminate any obstacle. it is the hero who must direct the warriors strength. the hero must decide, and the warrior is a servant to the hero's decision.

there are many examples of the warrior getting out of control. without direction the aggression of the warrior is indiscriminate, and will kill without remorse. this is why the hero must be sufficiently developed to handle the warrior's energy.

so the warrior is called to action by the hero. the warrior want's to fight because the hero believes there is a cause worth fighting for.

It isn't always to fight and attack. Sometimes a man must fight to protect and defend.

Soldiers during WWII often said that they didn't fight for honor or glory or patriotism, they didn't fight FOR anything. They fought against tyranny and oppression. They fought to defend those that couldn't defend themselves.

That last line, "To defend those that are unable to defend themselves", is part of the Marine code I believe.

Love of his country and what it stands for, and the threat of the loss of freedom.

Your "animalistic nature" would only be true of an animalistic enemy.

A sense of honor, defending the weak against the ones who prey on the weak or the unable to defend themselves...a sence of right and wrong, and wanting to defend what is right.

For some life is meaningless unless you have something to die for, and war is a socially justifiable reason for someone to die.
