I dont think its strange, they also like honey too.
We have 3 mackleys spectre stick insects, and two chllie rose tarantulas as pets but also keep lots of other insects for our lizards.
We also have lots of different colourful snails in our fish tank which are also pets. Loads of people keep insects as pets.

No, it's not weird. I had butterflies as pets when I was little.
I would collect cocoons I found and put them in a butterfly house, then watch them hatch. xD

i would recomend you get it a collar and lead for when you take it out at night otherwise its going to be a job and an half to get it to come down from the street lamp.
