We don't have any Sonic's here in Maryland as far as I know.
I saw several of these on the drive from Maryland
to my family reuinion in Georgia. I think I saw them in North Carolina, Sourth Carolina, and Georgia.

What kind of food do they have, and what are all the lanes for.
Do they have several drive thru's instead of one... or do you sit in your car and eat (as opposed to eating inside) like they did back in the 50's.

Sonic as stated above is a fast food chain, it is one of the few drive-ups still existing from back in the 50's when drive-in restaurants were popular, and drive-thru windows weren't common place in fast food joints.

They are mostly known for their Onion Rings and Malts/Shakes, but they're primarily a burger place, they have things like hotdogs, chicken strips, grilled cheese, fries, etc, but they are still a burger place at heart. They also serve shakes and sundays, and mixed sodas.

There are two types of restaurants, and you have to watch out for them, because one is very different from the other, corporate and non-corporate. Corporate Franchise goes strictly by what Sonic Corp advertises, prices, menu, and for the most part hours of operations, etc. Non-Corporate Franchises have paid Sonic Food Corp for the rights to use the name, they don't always follow the same pricing, menu, or time structure set out by the Sonic Corp. for the most part the non-corporate have disappeared, there are still a few out there, but not many, Sonic has made it very unprofitable to license the name without taking the company policies along with it.

Sonic has also branched out into other areas out side of the drive-in, they now have dine-in and mall locations along with adding drive through features to their drive-in shops.

Sonic is trying to branch out nation wide and Maryland is one of the area's which they are looking to franchise in, but it requires interest of a restaurants franchiser before you'll get any up there.

Sonics are thick on the ground down here in NC.

Right, you order though a speaker (at the car or at an outside table) or they bring you the order. It's basic burger fare and frozen crap - fast food.

Funny part is - at the beach, they hire a ton of Eastern European kids for all the minimum wage gigs. Ever try to make out a thick Russian accent through a cruddy, static-filled Sonic speaker? Not fun.

There are Sonic Restaurants here in Nebraska too. They have Hamburgers, Foot longs (hot-dogs), Onion Rings, tator tots, French Fries, just about what ever kind of refreshment's you want,(expect alcohol of course). My favorite thing at Sonics is when you can make any flavor of pop you want. My favorite all of the time is the Strawberry Dr. Pepper. They put real whole strawberries in the glass then fell it up with the Dr. Pepper. Yummmmm... One word of advice never try the blue coconut Dr. Pepper. Yuckkkkkkkk!!!!! One thing about it though is that they are slow at serving you. For the reason is because they cook what ever order you ordered so it be hot and fresh when you get it.

You drive into a lane and park. Then place your order and they bring it out to your car. Then you eat in your car. The food is okay, not the best. But the type of stuff you get a craving for every now and then.

They have burgers, hot dogs, fries, onion rings, etc. and yes, you sit in your car to eat like back in the '50's. In fact, I think Sonic started back in the '50's, in Stillwater, OK. They're all over the south and southwest now, but I'm not sure the extent of their reach. It's not bad food, I love the cherry limeades.
