Usually the culprit is fruit or bread sitting out on the counter. If you dig in the fruit bowl, you may find a piece that is rotting, or if the whole bowl in general is a little more ripe...then you will have gnats. Other produce like potatoes or onions that are getting a little older will draw gnats too.
You can also make sure the trash is taken out frequently because it boils down to foods as they break down sugars.

House plants can be a good place for gnats and those icky, tiny black flies, too. If you keep live plants growing in or near a window, the soil will warm up and hatch any eggs that have been laid there. Flush your household plants at least once a week; allowing the water to flow through at least twice.

awww gnuts, i hate gnats ! ! Probably some food left out too long. If you don`t have pets to worry about, set off bug bombs while you`re not home.
