A liberal is a progressive who focuses mostly on civil liberties. Most democrats are liberal, while a few are conservative. A republicans values freedom of minds and markets but is steeped in tradition and is very cautious about change. A clasical liberal is actually a republican by today's standards.

Now that you know what a liberal is, isn't weird that people throw that word around like it's the plague? Liberals want progress and equality.
It was the liberals who thought blacks and women should be able to vote. People don't think about those things. They just assume every liberal is a "baby killing," gay loving hippie. It is all just propaganda.

A liberal is someone who values civil liberties, freedom and diversity. Liberals oppose most govt regulation.

Some liberals are Democrats -- many liberals are not.

Liberals are NOT socialists, because liberals value free market economy, while socialists want govt regulation of business.

A Republican is member of the Republican political party, which is comprised mainly of conservatives. Some value free market economy, and small govt (fiscal conservatives). Some want govt regulation of everything (neo-conservatives).
