Why Is a medically recommended abortion for an individual woman, a social,& political issue/?

It is a moral/religious issue for the individual woman. A moral dilemma to be sure, but why or how exactly is it a social and political issue? Please explain your answer as best you can, focusing on the social and political aspects w/o reference to the moral/religious issues which are limited to the women who finds themselves having to decide whether or not to follow the medical advice. they get.

It would be a moral issue. Besides, socially and politically this is not an issue if it is deemed that a womans health is at risk. I have a brother who was born in the early 1950's. Even at 5 months pregnant, my mother and father were given a choice of terminating the pregnancy because my mother's health was at risk. The topic of abortion is such because of women who choose abortion for other reason's other than health reasons. Using abortion for birth control is why this is being made a social and political issue.

I think the root of everything comes from religion because this country was mostly founded on the Ten Commandments so there can be no answer that is not acknowleding the religious factors. The reason it is a social issue is because people have their seperate beliefs and abortion to them is something that is unforgivable. They feel that giving this world a life is the most important thing a woman can do and by getting an abortion we are robbing the world of someone that could potentially change it or at least have a chance to. In some aspects they are right. Who are we to assume we have the right to say if human life has the right to be here are not? But a lot of these people talk w/o experience. The majority of these people might not have been raped and impregnated by their attacker, or told if they kept the baby they will die they were just told from young age that abortion was wrong so they run w/that. What some people don't understand is that it is a decision that is going to affect the woman more than anyone. She is the one that has to sit through the procedure and is told in graphic detail everything that is going to be done to get rid of her "inconvience" She is the one that has to endure the pain not only of getting it done, but the three weeks of healing as well. She is the one that has to live w/the "what if" that's never going to go away because she will have to live w/it for the rest of her life. It's only a political issue because it is a social issue, politics have to keep the people happy and at least make them think they care even if they don't. It's only a social/moral issue because it's a religious issue. Peoples beliefs and morals come from their religious background, what they were taught to believe or what they beleive themselves, either way everything stems from religion, so you wouldn't have any of the moral, social or political views on this topic if we didn't have such a strong base for religion in this country.

I think it becomes a social and political issue because once a pregnancy has occured there are 2 lives to consider. Where do you draw the line and say that one of those lives is just "trash" to be disposed of.If that life is of no value, then how long will it be before we dicide that the disabled should also be disposed of and what about people who contribute nothing to society? It opens up pandora's box. Where do a persons individual rights begin or end and what will society accept? The time to decide you don't want a child is before you had sex. I know that as a tax payer , I find it repugnant to be forced to pay for women to have abortions that they are not even paying for. I used to work in a hospital where women would come back over and over, despite counseling, and even being given birth control methods at no cost. When asked why they had not used it they would replay,"Oh , well if I used birth control , then my boyfriend would think I was a hoe" You have to shake your head in disbelief when someone does that for the 5th time, and you know they will be back in 3 months.
If you are faced with a medically necessary abortion, this was an unforseen and deeply sad situation. Get more than one opinion from you medical team . One answer is not always the right answer. A teaching hospital associated with a large university would be where I would be looking. I wish you well.

It's simply because abortion is a hot topic in politics. I mean, people will still think you're killing a human life. they say "why kill one life to save another?" But that goes both ways. You can't not bring religion in to this, since religion is the start of all the problems. I mean if christians didn't believe that a baby was a baby at the moment of conception, it likely wouldn't be such an issue to get an abortion at all, but they do, so it's a problem.

If i were pregnant, and the doctor told me that if i took this fetus to term, i would very likely die, I would have an abortion. It isn't selfish, it's self-perseverance. But it really is up to the woman and her morals, like you said.

Well, I love this question. I was in a medical ethics class in college where the professor wanted us to debate various topics, one of which was abortion. I found this offensive. Because it is a personal choice, it is not choice of many it is a choice of one, and to pretend that a person without a uterus(man) could even begin to comprehend the physical ramifications of being pregnant is absurd. And for the sake of banter to allow people who have never been in this situation to debate it is just banter. To me it would be like -class today we are going to debate weather or not a person with cancer should have chemotherapy. The chances of anybody having a personal opinion on the subject is slim.and how insulting would it be to hear the others argue what they don't know.
