Engine braking is simply using the engine's compression to slow the vehicle. When you lift your foot off the gas, the engine resistance will slow your vehicle down. Engine braking is used specifically with big rig diesel trucks since diesel engines have a higher compression ratio which gives more resistance than a regular gas engine.

An engine break is exactly that, mainly used on big trucks it uses the engine as a brake by shutting off the fuel so it only compresses air causing it to slow down.
