Hmmm... I own the Cream 2005 DVD, and Jack Bruce taught me how to play bass (along with Mr. Entwhistle). I own all the Red Hot Chilli Peppers stuff. I can play Metallicas 'Pulling Teeth' with my eyes closed!
Every response thus far is totally lame!
Why can't someone name a truely GOOD bass player? The only worthy opponent I've heard so far is Flea, and he's negligible at best!
What about Jaco Pastorious, Anthony Jackson, or Yannick Top? I haven't heard there names mentioned yet? Does anyone here even know who they are?
Spencer C - I seriously doubt you could handle a conversation about bass players with me, let alone an argument! Don't be silly!

Ken B - The question is highlighted in yellow.
And to answer YOUR question, yes I am a bass player, and have been for over 40 years. 25 of which were professional, and my only source of income. I retired from the music industry in the late 1980's, but still play on a regular basis for the pure enjoyment. Once a bass player... always a bass player!
Let me know if you have any more problems reading my questions, and I'll do my very best to help you.

sooooooo......are you ASKING me who my favorite bass player is, or TELLING me who my favorite bass player should be????
Maybe your question should have been " tell me your favorite bass player, and I'll tell you why you don't don't know what you're talking about!!!!!!
I have great respect for the talent of all the players that are mentioned on here.......but none are my FAVORITE.....and I'm sure as heck not going to tell you who my favorite player is so that you can tell me how lame he/she is!
Are you a player? Doesn't sound like it.
**********************************************************************
I guess I have an issue with you asking people who their favorite player is, and then saying "all the responses so far are lame"............did I misinterpret that quote?.....if so, I apologize. As an aside, our careers parallel each other somewhat, although age and health have limited me to 3 or 4 gigs a month and the odd session doing ad/promo tags. My personal favorite?????........Prakash John (from the mid '70's)

I'd have to say either John Paul Jones from Zeppelin or Gene Simmons from KISS.
Jones helped to write a number of songs, and he did what he did well. His parts were always able to be heard over Page's guitar, and Bonham's drumming. He wrote Nobody's Fault But Mine, and that song was great. He made the bass more of a solo instrument also, having a few solos in some of Zeppelin's newer stuff.
Simmons is just a wicked great player. He makes KISS songs sound awesome because he has got mad skills. He helped to write numerous of the more famous KISS songs, and his bass was sick. His BattleAxe was the sickest bass ever. He made the bass in KISS stand out with the skills he's got.

Flea's probably the best bassist these days. Of course, that could be because of the weird funk and rock mix the Red Hot Chili Peppers produced. And funk heavily relies on the bass.
I also like John Entwistle of the Who. My Generation probably contained one of the first bass solos in rock history. If you haven't heard 5:15 before, hear it. The bass solo is amazing!
And another one would be Paul McCartney. Never liked his solo work, but in the Beatles, his bass was right there playing the melody. In fact, I think McCartney totally overshadowed George's guitar with his bass. George has some real basic guitar parts....

Definitely Metallica's Cliff Burton. Nikki Sixx was a decent bass player, and excellent entertainer........ just like Gene Simmons. Cliff Burton could REALLY play though. Some others..... Malcom Young ( AC/DC....... not really that great.....but the band , as a whole, is my favorite......everybody can party to AC/DC) ..... Rodger Waters ( Pink Floyd ).... Steve Harris ( Iron Maiden )..... John Paul Jones ( Zeppelin )..... Lemmy ( MotorHead).... Sh*t.......there are alot of them. For the music of my era, I'd have to say Burton ........ but there are alot of good ones.

Juan Alderete. I love his work with The Mars Volta.
I came back to read this and read your update and you are a sorry excuse for a musician with no respect for others opinions...I'm sure if we heard recordings of these songs you claim to play they would not live up to the talk.
