I seem to run into quite a few americans who seem to resign themselves to certain things....certain things that did not have to be.
They say things like "if no illegals, then our economy would fall apart". They make it sound like our country never ever functioned without illegals. They say things like "we buy almost everything made in China..its impossible to stop" is it? is it really impossible? seems not so long ago we bought nothing from china.

What is up with this resignation that we are so weak so dependent on things that we did not use to depend on? its like a disease or something....or perhaps more like a drug addict that has been fed a drug so long that now they feel they cant live without it.

I am not one who believes that. Our economy may suffer somewhat initially but as we always do we would figure out the best way to fix it. We have not always depended on illegals or imports from China, there's no reason why we must now.

I dont think we would fall apart if we had no illegals here or if we boycotted China. I think people underestimate the American economy.

We shouldn't be trading with China because they abuse their works and they bearly pay their workers anything. The same people that make all the products for Wal-mart cant afford those products at Wal-mart. Did I mention that there are no environment laws there so everything is polluted. People are forced to live and eat of the same river that is polluted by the factories. Thats just a tip of the ice berg but you get why I think we shouldn't trade with China.

As for all the illegals if we focused on fixing their govn't and their economy then they wouldn't have to come over here to make a decent living. Its simple but sadly not many politicans have figured that out yet. They are bent of deporting them and building a wall which will only force illegals to find another way into this country.

Lets hope people realize this and the sooner the better.

No, I do not think so. Our economy has a built-in advantage in the fact that it tends to be self-correcting. We may experience some economic discomfort from higher prices but that will eventually even out over time. An economy doesn't exist for over 200 years by being completely dependent on some sort of outside stimulus (like cheap labor).

As an example of what I'm talking about, look at the Euro versus the Dollar. The Dollar is getting thrashed by the Euro in the world market right now, but this may be a good thing in disguise; it makes American-made products cheaper (that may be why I keep seeing so many Europeans in New York on shopping sprees right now). If our products get any cheaper for the European market then that means we export more goods to the EEU than we import, further tilting the trade balance between the two entities in our favor. Like I said, our economy is self-correcting, provided we don't do anything stupid to keep it from doing that.

Our ever-wise leadership (both dem and repub alike) signed our country up for a number of completely idiotic international trade agreements.

Obviously if we were to pass legislation "boycotting China" we would be in breach of our own agreement and have to pay hefty penalties by order of an international court (WTO related). I don't have the exact details, but I would imagine it would be on the order of hundreds of millions of dollars.

Just trying to rally Americans to boycott China -- that's an uphill battle. It's hard to persuade someone not to buy cheaper products. Especially when certain American products are inferior to foreign made ones (cars perhaps?)

But we really need to stop free trade, it is killing our country. If foreign imports are smacked with tarriffs, American businesses won't be undersold anymore. This isn't necesarily invidious protectionism.

Part of the reason imported goods are cheaper than domestic goods is that American employers have to comply with worker protection laws (minimum wage, etc.).

Thus, given a situation where workers of Business A (factory in the U.S.) are equally talented as workers of Business B (factory in China); Business B wins, because Business A has to pay more per employee thanks to US worker protection laws; hence they must up the price on their goods. The goods come out the exact same quality at the market; because in my hypothetical, the workers are equally talented; yet Business B goods are cheaper. Business A can't continue losing money like this -- at the end of the day, either it closes shop, or relocates to China, firing all the U.S. workers.

The only other solution to this would be very unpopular -- eliminate worker protection laws. No one would ever go for that. The better solution is to fix trade. How can we fix it? Here's a start -- Never vote for "free trade" politicians. They are ruining America from within. "Fair trade" only.

And don't believe this "Free AND Fair trade" nonsense. Bush came out with this idea, where you can accomplish both free and fair trade simultaneously -- either you are using tariffs or your not. Bush is not. So at its core, this is really just free trade.

No, I don't believe that at all. Yes, there are American's who DO believe this, but the facts stand that the USA would be better off if we didn't depend so much on China.

Right now, as a consumer I am AFRAID to buy any toys made from there. I am glad that I learned about the recalls and the lead paint because now I feel LIBERATED from the trap of having to buy it because my child wants it. Now, I am not going to get it because I am PROTECTING my child from it. Same with other things. I am also growing more and more of MY food.

It is not hard to stop, but you need a reason, and as far as I am concerned they have spoken loudly!

Our economic device won't disintegrate, it already is. gasoline costs going up are affecting each and every thing we do daily. Groceries are greater high priced because of the fact of it. I actually have a relatives of 6, my grocery value has practically doubled interior the previous month. i've got been lowering via no longer transporting (being the taxi) my teenagers as lots. i will spend $40.00 a week in transporting to the place they decide for to bypass. i visit carry them one way, the different determine desires to do the different. I additionally condense my journeys and run all my errands at one time. One food market is greater useful than the different, yet as quickly as I take into the account of distance to the greater useful food market,I shop on with the lesser one. The nutrition costs the comparable, in basic terms no longer as lots style. Bush could supply up his oil. we've our very own oil and it's time to dip into our reserves that Bush refuses to do!

Our economy would not fall apart. I think we would do quite well without China too.

We have indeed become more weak. More of us need to become less dependent and go back to work for our country. Great Question

If you were somehow able to deport all the undocumented workers in the U.S., then it's economy would be significantly crippled. I mean, what other people can you find that are willing to do such backbreaking work for such little pay and under such inadequate conditions? What legal citizen is willing to do that?
