Well to be frank, i'm a 19 year old girl who really knows nothing about cars. My boyfriend is a computer guy, not a handy man, and so is my dad. Fortunately, my step dad knows cars and when my brakes started grinding I called him to see if he could figure out what was wrong.

apparently my front right rotor is dead and my brake pads in the front are pretty gone.

He said i'm looking at spending 100-150 to get them fixed at Midas. Has anyone been there before or can anyone confirm this for me? I have to take my car in tomorrow and I don't want to be tricked into spending more than I need to.

It's a 2000 Dodge Stratus if that means anything, and my back brakes are fine.

You could buy the parts from a store such as advanced auto's or Auto Zone and just get midas to install it. But there is always a Charge for manual labor but it should only take about 30 mins of manual labor each tire for Disc brake, drum brakes on the other hand.. . . . .. You could see how much it would cost to buy the parts from a 3rd party, and find out if they'd install it, them = midas or a local garage. But learning how to change the Rotors and pads is easy, it'll save you alot of money in the long run.

its best to replace the pads on all your brakes at once.
the price sounds about right.
but its around 100 bucks per axle for the pads. You have 2 axles.

You could get away with only doing 1 (the front) for 100$

the rotor will probably be about 80-100$. you have one on each wheel.

I'd figure a price of 200-300$ sounds reasonable.

I think I got 4 pads and 2 rotors for around 320$

But they might try to work you up on the price by mentioning other things. Just get done what you feel needs to be done.
Bring a male friend with you.
some shops give false information to women

(my ex was told she needed a new piston return spring for her engine and that it would cost about 250$ to open the block to get to it and replace it).....there's no such thing as a piston return spring.

buying the parts yourself and bringing them to a locally owned shop can help shave about 100$ or more off the cost.

I do all my own brakes and the like so i can't give you a good estimate however i can give some advice. Have your step dad call a few places to get some estimates and tell them what you need. That will pretty well insure you are getting the best deal. If you can find someone to do it for you you will save a lot of money i promise that much. good luck. Always shop around when getting your car worked on unless you have a particular shop that has a good rep with you.

If ya step dad knows cars why doesnt he do it for you? it would be cheaper to buy 2 new front discs and some brake pads and fluid....and its not real hard to do either.

It could be as high as $350. Check the website for Midas, Sears, Tire Kingdom, etc. for coupons.
