WIFI describes a wireless networking technology -- specifically, IEEE 802.11a, b, g or n. If you're using wireless networking of any sort, you're very likely using WIFI.

WLAN stands for Wireless LAN. A LAN is a local area network. That is, several machines linked together on a local network. A LAN that uses wireless technology is a WLAN.

Wlan stands for Wireless Local Area Network. It is a type of network. You use WiFi technology to access or build a wlan. Wifi just describes that you are using wireless technology, but does not describe what wireless standard you are using (802.11a, b, g, f).

I will put it in very layman terms.

If you are buying mobile phone, PDA or laptops, the terms Wi-Fi or WLAN is identical. Wi-Fi or WLAN both denotes that the product has the capability of wireless internet connection.

Wi-Fi describe the embedded technology of Wireless Local Area Networks (WLAN) based on the IEEE 802.11 standard.
