Most of the country - the exceptions being Quebec and a couple of our territories - have the day off.
In Alberta where I live, it's called Heritage Day. Other provinces have different names for it (eg. Civic Holiday in Ontario), but most of us get the day off from work.

Thursday's are considered "getaway days".
They are called this cause teams are usually finishing up a series with one team and will travel later on in the day to their next destination.
Playing in the day gives the team more time to get to their next series.

maybe there was scheduling conflicts? depends on who is broadcasting it too.. if ESPN is, then they definitely might have had scheduling conflicts or maybe George steinbrenner just had other plans for tomorrow evening...who knows?
