No - there is no such thing as an asterisk in the record books. He hit 714. Yes, Ruth hit those home runs while only white men were allowed in MLB. Is this Ruth's fault? No. If in 50 years, there are women playing baseball, will we want all the records set before they were allowed to play dismissed? The record book is merely a statistical record of the game's history, but is not the sole reference for it. The great thing about baseball is that most of its' history is based upon stories, not just the numbers themselves.

either everyone gets an asterisk or no one does. is it fair that ruth's competition may not ahve been as good as bonds' or aaron's? or the fact that aaron took 5,000 more at bats to break ruth's record. or the fact that bonds has been walked so many times he probably would be at 800 by now. or the fact that no one counts records like josh gibson's or saddahara oh.
an asterisk is the stupidest thing i can think of to put in a record book. it's either a record or it's not.

Unfortunately the era that Babe Ruth played in was the era when black men did not PLAY on any sport with whites.... they had what was called the "***** League" back then.... Jackie Robinson, who was the very first African American to play in what is now the MAJOR LEAGUES ( he played for the old Brooklyn Dodgers)....didn't play in the previously all white major league until 1947..... Babe Ruth DIED in 1948......

He should get an asterisk next to his name because he really should have hit about 1k if he laid off the booze, women and hot dogs. Tremendous talent and stats, but he sure could have done more.

Not because all the guys were white but because pitchers were throwing straight fastballs and now we have all kinds of breaking pitches that didn't exist then.

Why does race have to be brought into it? He didnt have any control over who he played against. He would have hit homeruns off of whites or blacks it didnt matter.

No. But he should have one because he pitched for five years and probably would have hit 1000 HR's if he didnt.
