you'll be missing out on a HUGE part of the college experience, and you'll only get that chance once in life. tell them it's not fair that they take that away from you

Contragulations on entering college, and I can sense the excitement in your tone of writing. Would your parents be paying for the dorm or will scholarship/grant/loan money pay for it? Maybe your parents wish to cut down on college costs for their sake and your own sake by letting you live at home.
I lived on campus my first year, and it was pretty awesome to just walk to class without worrying about traffic, gas money, car troubles, or being late to class.
But realize that just because you are a commuter, doesn't mean that you can't have a social life, participate in campus organizations and go to parties and things like that. Is there anyway you can reason with your parents when it comes to attending social functions, parties, and the like on campus? I'm sure they won't mind. I live at home, and I save thousands of dollars in living expenses every year so I may sound biased towards your parents.

Live on campus, there is so much that goes on everyday. Living in the dorms is a great experience, I attend cal state northridge , then I went to Mount st Marys college. You become more independent, you r able to take care of your business. You don't want mommy and daddy taking you to school and picking you up everyday it is not high school. College is a different experience, you may want to hang out with your friends after class, but mommy and daddy r out there waiting for you. LIVE ON CAMPUS

Emphasize the fewer distractions and better learning environment factors.
I realize that economics can come into play for some students. but to go to college and continue to live at home is very problematic, to say the least.
That said, Go 49ers! Too bad they don't play football anymore, but I think it's cool that their baseball team has a completely separate nickname - The Dirtbags. Seriously!

Let's start talking the cash here like in money! Like in big bucks.:
How are you going to pay for the dorm room? Or more to the point how are your parents going to pay for the dorm room?
Wake up to the real world kiddo! Your parents are probably going in hock deep enough sending you to college as it is. They don't need the added expense of a Dorm room as well.
You need to try to help them out anyway you can in that respect.
Just browsing through looking for a reference text book of mine I'd leant out and never got back. Found it in a small Louisiana College book store. Got to nosing around just to see how much it cost to go to College there. Liked to have crocked when saw the prices for dorms. And Louisiana in one of the cheapest places in the country to go to College. I know dorms there where you are going to be twice three times higher. Just be glad they can afford to send you to college.
Sorry to throw a wet blanket over things but it is the real world now.

Apply for scholarships or extra loans to pay for it if you don't have enough fin aid. If your aid package is big enough, just take some initiative and fill out a dorm app and move in. You're an adult; they can't stop you.

what the hell. dont let them do that to you. youre a freakin college student now. make them pay for your room and board!!
first of all, like i doubt youll schedule your classes like how its been for high school. youre probably guna want to study at the library, at your dorm, go out to eat, play with friends, have a part time job, and everything. you need a dorm!!! its part of the college experience.
tell them to do it or else you will like. idk. idk why a parent would do that.
