Several of the earlier presidents were elected because they were well-known military figures rather than political figures, such as Zachary Taylor. The most recent, I believe, was Eisenhower.

yes and they were all military men. eisenhower, washington, taylor, andrew jackson, grant, tyler etc., etc.
i think the closest non-politician might have been woodrow wilson. he did receive a law degree but didn't do much with it. he was only governor of NJ for 3 years before being elected president. prior to that he was president of princeton and taught at the school.

Possibly Eisenhower. He spent a lot of time making General; I doubt he had time to run for office.
