Steve Yzerman was the best captain/leader of any sport of all times. He meant so much to the city of Detroit. He was a leader with his on ice play and his off. Even the presence of him on the bench with limited playing time late in his career you could tell the difference.

He's not even the Red Wings' best captain ever. Come on, give some props to Ted Lindsay and Alex Delvecchio.

I mean, until he learned to play a two-way game about 12 to 15 years into his career, he was a very good player but that's about it.

You really cannot measure a captain's value by career stats esp. across eras.

I think the best captain ever was possibly Jean Beliveau (no, I'm not picking overrated Mark Messier).

Steve Yzerman is NOT the best captain ever. If he was..........He would have been a captain of a Canada Cup/World Cup/Olympic Team............and he never was.

Steve Yzerman was the captain of the Red Wings for 20 years, but it wasn't until his 11th season as captain that they won a Stanley Cup. And by the time that this happened, the team was so talented that anything less would have been a disappointment. Three Cups in 20 seasons seems a disappointment to me from a Captain's perspective.

As for Yzerman, he is not on my 10 best players list, and if I really thought about it, he may not make my top 20. There are several people who are extremely knowledgable about hockey (Bob McKenzie, Brian McFarlane among them) who don't have Yzerman among their top 25 of all time. In terms of points per game (min 500 games played)...............he's not in the top 20 (22nd).

So, who is the best captain ever? Captain is a relative term. Two thinks I would expect from a captain would be success and leadership. Too many people have said that Yzerman wasn't very vocal in the dressing room (Shanahan, Hull, Chelios, L. Robitaille have all said this at one point in time or another).

To me, the following players were 'great' captains (these are in random order, but are better in my opinion (and many other knowledgable hockey minds) than Steve Yzerman).
George Armstrong of the Toronto Maple Leafs. His vociferous nature in the dressing room earned accolades. 4 Stanley Cups in 12 years didn't hurt either.

Brian Sutter. The year before he became the Blues Captain, they missed the playoffs by a country mile. He becomes captain and engineered one of the biggest single season jumps in history, and almost matched in the next year as well. While Sutter was captain, the Blues never missed the playoffs.

Mario Lemieux. Another great captain as evidenced by his choice of captaincy in the 2002 Winter Olympics. He was the Penguins leader both off and on the ice.

Bobby Clarke. Say what you will about this man, he was a truly great player on the ice and a great captain. In 7 years as captain of the Flyers he won 3 Hart Trophies, 2 Stanley Cups, a Canada Cup and had to battle diabetes.

Denis Potvin. 4 Stanley Cups, 2 Norris Trophies, and an all-round respect from around the league.

Montreal has had a plethora of great captains that far surpass Yzerman in quality and success.
Maurice Richard, 3 Stanley Cups in 3 years as captain.
Jean Beliveau, 5 Stanley Cups in 10 yrs as captain
Yvan Cournoyer, 4 Stanley Cups in 4 Yrs as Captain, and 8 Stanley Cups in 12 Years as Captain/Alternate Captain.

Wayne Gretzky. 4 Stanley Cups as an Oiler Captain. 3 Canada Cups as Captain. 1998 Olympic Captain. Several players have referred to him as the leader they learned the most from.

There have been other very good captains.......Ray Bourque, Scott Stevens, John Bucyk, Mark Messier among them. But the ones I listed above, had a greater impact on their team, and their team's performance than Steve Yzerman

Note: I'm not sure who was more responsible for the 1990 Edmonton Cup....the nucleus left behind after Gretzky's departure...or Mark Messier. Same with the 1994 Rangers....was it Mike Keenan, or Mark Messier. Mark Messier's tenure as Canuck captain, and most of his tenure as Ranger captain had teams that failed to make the playoffs or had losing records. Messier was Captain for the Oilers for three years, during those three years, the Oilers averaged 85 points and only once finished higher than third in their division once. In 10 years as Ranger captain, the Rangers failed to make the playoffs 5x and were below .500. 6x. In 3 years as Canuck captain, the Canucks never made the playoffs, and were 41 games below .500. (one year above .500).

So, Messier was a Captain for 16 years
He won 2 Stanley Cups
His teams failed to make the playoffs 8x
His teams were below .500 8x
I'm not so sure that this qualifies as being a 'great' or even 'good' captain.

He was a great player, but I think that Mark Messier is the best captain. He was nicknamed "The Captain." And, he guaranteed victory. That makes a great captain.
