Sounds like you are looking for some programs that will offer you protection similar to what Norton is offering. I recommend downloading and using the following
Zone Alarm Personal Firewall- Cost: Free
http://www.zonealarm.com/store/content/c...
Ad-Aware Personal - Cost Free
http://www.download.com/ad-aware-2007/30...
SpyBot Search & Destroy - Cost: Free
http://www.download.com/spybot-search-de...
HijackThis! - Cost: Free
WARNING: This program lists the contents of key areas of the Registry and hard drive to help you identify and remove any hijacks (trojans, exe files, ect). I HIGHLY recommend consulting someone familiar with these files before deleting ANYTHING.

For data protection and backups, make use of your computers 'Restore' feature, which can usually be accessed by Right Clicking on MYCOMPUTER and choosing PROPERTIES and then clicking the SYSTEM RESTORE tab. Remember to right click on the actual directory, not the shortcut to MyComputer that you may have on your desktop.
Hope this helps you find an alternate solution. Feel free to email if you have any questions!

Here is a simple tutorial on how to cleanup your computer. They are real basic steps, but it is a good first step to take and will often clean out 95% of the junk (such as spyware, viruses, etc) off your computer, and will remove most popups (if you have them). All the tools used are free of use. Here is the link:
