free software may be good for short term use but it can only get you so far. if you really want full protection you should download a paid version. i suggest Trend Micro Internet Security 2007 especially since it recently got ranked number one on a list from the latest issue (sept 2007) of Consumer Reports magazine. As the magazine puts it, Trend Micro Internet Security 2007 "offers fairly inexpensive all-around protection". here's the complete list:
