My county uses a work release program for inmates and people convicted of minor crimes who are unable to pay the fines. I back my truck up and they unload the garbage.

I haven't tipped in the past but, today, I saw a guy palm a $5 and pass it to an inmate with a 'thank you.' I'm guessing the crew isn't allowed to accept tips. What do you think?

I don't think they're supposed to receive ANYTHING from the outside when on work release. I don't take stuff to the dump very often and, around here, there's no work release convicts to help unload the truck but, if there were, I wouldn't tip them. I'd be afraid it was violating the rules.

If I felt they really worked for it, I might ask their guards if it was permissible to tip them before I did.

I would not.
I don't know where the money would go and the money will not help them lower their bill.

Plus. they're extremely LUCKY to have work release. That's a golden ticket in jail.

I've been in jail for a few weeks and would have LOVED a work release.

If I had the freedom to feel the wind on my face and the sunshine down on me, I could have handled jail for years

Why not? I had a couple inmates help me with a job and I tipped them.
