Getone that's suitably certified - if in the USA this means DOT. The Snell certification is world-wide, and most of the better helmets have it.
The helmet must fit properly to work - it should be a little tight when its new. It will mold to your head shape.
Don't not buy 2nd hand helmets - the shell can be damaged without the damage being visible.
Don't let anyone else wear your helmet - it will mold to their head shape, and won't fit as well afterwards.

this is my answer to roughly the same question from a few days ago...
Okay, hands down Arai is the best helmet you can get. That being said, pls read the following.
All helmets have to have DOT certification to be sold in the USA. So in theory, all helmets have to pass the same safety test so they are all just as safe as the others.
There is another test to higher (or some say just different) specs that helmets can pass and this is the SNELL test. Helmets do not have to pass this but it is usually a good thing that they do.
So, with all helmets passing DOT (and some also passing SNELL) the main difference in price is the features you get on the helmet.
The best 3 helmets in the world (in my opinion) are Arai, Shoei and AGV. Arai is definitely top dog. Again, this is just my opinion but if you look up these manufactures and compare with other helmets you will see why most other brands can be considered 'Budget Helmets'.
A good indication of this is to look at what the worlds top motorcycle racers wear. You will se the Arai, Shoei and AGV lead the list. Keep in mind, if you buy a Arai RX7RR Dani Pedrosa replica it is the EXACT same helmet that Dani wears in the race. THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE.
It is the same for most major brands race rep helmets. Keep in mind tho, sometimes companys put their racer sponsered graphics on different models that the racer might not actually wear. Check the companys websites to determine if it is the same one the racer wears. This goes for Arai, Shoei, AGV and also Suomy and Shark.
Just remember, always wear a helmet. That is the important thing. Arai's rock tho...awesome fit and finish, high tech materials, and very very light...which can make the difference on a long ride.
Plus, I just got my Dani Pedrossa Replica signed by Dani at the Moto GP. I think his signiture adds about 5 horsepower. LOL.
Good luck.

look for a helmet that has the Snell certification, any helmet that has passed their tests is a good helmet.
Get a full face helmet, you will notice that in magazines, the people always wear full face helmets
Finally try many brands as they don' t all have the same shape. I am not comfortable at all wearing a Arai helmet, but for the shape of my head a Shoei fits like a glove. What is the shape of your head.
A good helmet is expensive, but how much is your head worth. In my more than 40 years of riding, I have seen people get in accidents, and wind up quadraplegic, cripple for like, in a wheel chair or sometimes tied to a bed until death comes to free them, an if only they would have worn a good helmet, they would have suffered broken bones, but they would be able to lead a normal life, think about this, if your brain is damaged, you will loose the control of your body, but if your brain allows you to be aware of what is going on, you' ll be in a prison , your body, with no chance of parole, all this because you would have wanted to save $100 or $200 for a helmet

The best helmet for you is the one that fits your head properly. Remember, only buy a $25 helmet if you have a $25 head.

some brands fit some people better, if you have a round head a shoue might fit better then a bell which would fit a oval head better or vice-versa. Go out to a store and try on a couple of different brands, find the BRAND that fits you the best then order.

Yes. Not one from Sears or WalMart. It is your noggin. A good helmet costs. Go to a motorcycle shop and buy there. And make sure that it fits correctly.

There is no "best" as that is as subjective as asking what is "best" DSLR camera or "best" what ever. There are many major brands to pick from. Make sure you have a good fit (at first it will seem toward too tight as it will wear in, much like shoes.) and that it is both DOT and Shnell approved. I won't advertise here as that is a no-no, go to my profile and email me and I'll send you my web site.
