you need to check the anti freeze in it first,that's what the light is telling you,that its low,you could do damage to the engine,if it gets too low,good luck on it.

Well, if you open the hood you can probably see if there is still some coolant in there. If so, it is still OK enough for you to go home and let the engine cool down(overnight) so you can add more coolant to the overflow container.
Is it serious? If it is gone, there is no way to cool the motor, and you will be another wreck on the side of the road with the hood up. .. waiting for a tow.

look in your overflow tank and see if its empty, it could be a small problem that turns into a big problem, and I would be willing to bet you have a plastic intake manifold and its leaking there
