16 - x = 2
Add x to both sides.
16 = 2 + x
Subtract 2 from both sides.
14 = x
And there's your answer.

1) 16 - x = 2 (now you move the 16 over to the other side to have all the like terms on one side)
2) - x = 2 - 16 (subtract on the right side and you get...)
3) - x = -14 (now divide -14 by the coefficient of x; since there is no number in front of x and there is a negative sign, the coefficient is -1)
4) x = 14 (ANSWER!)
Hope it helped. I'm only 14; I don't really know how to write step by steps.

16-x=2
subtract 16 from both sides (this preserves the equality)
16 - 16 - x = 2 - 16
0 - x = - 14
- x = -14
(another way of interpreting he same operation is to say that you move the 16 to the other side by changing its sign).
- x = - 14
Multiply both sides by -1 (equality is preserved)
(-1) * (-x) = (-1)*(-14)
-(-x) = -(-14)
x = 14
---
This method works for all (solvable) cases.
The order in which the steps are done is not important. You can even use different steps. The idea is to end up with an x by itself on one side, and the value, by itself, on the other side.

1) 16-x=2
2) (!6-x)-2=2-2 subtract 2 from each side
3) (16-x)-2=0
4) (16-x)-2 / 23= 0/23 divide each side by 23
5) (16-x) -2 /23 = 0
6) (16-x+x) -2/23 = x add x to each side
7) 16 -2/23 = x
8) (16-2/23) x y2 = xy2 mutyiply y2 to each side
9) disregard steps 1-9
10) subtract 2 from each side 16-2-x =0
11) add x to each side 16-2-x+x =0+x therefore
14=x
