If you're going to prison, join the education gang.

Prisons are not fun, but they have been seriously dramatized and fictionalized to scare people into not going there. Some prisons have gangs and others don't. If it's your first time, unless you've done something really heinous, you were in a violent gang on the outside, or you pissed off the wrong person, you likely wouldn't end up in that kind of prison. A lot of people come into prison already connected to a gang.

Prisons are supposed to be scary places. In reality, the worst part of being in prison is the boredom. Getting shivved, raped, power struggles, protection, fear, domination, these do happen in prisons, but in most cases, it's just bored people with nothing to do, taking it out on each other.

A lot of prisons are doing great things and making a difference in inmate's lives. A prison can only offer the opportunity; it takes maturity and a feeling of empowerment to change your life.

Studies indicate that people who end up in prison have two common traits, immaturity and a lack of education. A very insufficient definition of immaturity is that these prisoners rationalize away their personal responsibility and empowerment. In other words, they blame everyone else but themselves, and they don't feel personally empowered to change anything.

When prisoners get educated, that's when they end up doing better in life and in prison. There's a direct correlation between education and decreased recidivism. They gain a sense of empowerment and take responsibility for their lives when they learn a vocational trade and get educated. If you make yourself valuable to your fellow prisoners, (offering legal advice, writing love letters home, teaching them to read, do math, learn a trade, etc.) no one will bother you, they'll look up to you and they will respect you.

If I went to prison, I'd turn into a sponge. I'd learn everything there was to learn and take every class I could. Second, I would be like water, with no resistance (Bruce Lee philosophy). Be polite to everyone. Be a good listener. Be polite. Offer no problems to the guards. Be a role model.

The initiation for joining a violent gang may be to stab some innocent guy, or letting someone have their way with you. They also jump you in, which means they beat you down. It's not worth it.

James you got @#$%^ written all over you.....you're right a gang would probably be whats best for you. However, you'll probably end up being passed around said gang as girlfriend material anyway. So my advice would be not to break the law.

I think that may very well may be a strong possibility. From what I have seen on tv programs about prisons, this may be the best bet for survival. I hope to haydes that I never have to find out.

I'm not a criminal so I wouldn't commit a crime. But if I was there I would preach the gospel to them and give them hope of salvation and repentance to eternal life
