Yeah, I'd have to agree, you shouldn't get a thumbs down unless you say something offensive or totally off topic.

I think for many the rating option seems to be a way of getting their opinion on ones answer heard. If someone rates an answer thumbs up, it means they agree or like that answer. A thumbs down can mean a variety of things such as them not agreeing to the answer or them not liking the user at all. Personal opinions can target a wide rating from others because they also want to be heard via the rating system.

Because there are a lot of jerks who hang out on here and thumbs down for fun. I only thumbs down if it's obscene or if it's a page long answer.

Lots of people on here are so viligant with their answers and view points. When the topic concerns narrow minded view points (for ex. women's rights) I have noticed conservative responders give thumbs down if you think women and men are equal. I just take these with a grain of salt and actually it could be considered a compliment at least these narrow minded people have read your response and maybe it will make them think.

People don't always agree with your point of view opposed to what they believe and feel. But hey everyone has a right to their opinions and people don't care to agree with something that has no merit with them. I have seen it plenty of times with me and my opinions but I'm speaking what I feel and if I don't agree with someone else based on my beliefs i will give them a thumbs down too because it's not something that I agree with.

Sometimes people are looking for a specific answer, and if yours dosen't fit their criteria, you automatically get downed. At least you don't lose any points, so I normally take it in stride.

Try not to take it personally. Not everyone is going to agree with your opinion. It happens to all of us. As long as you are respectful with your answers you are fine.
