Is it a CLUNK type noise, or a TAP? If it is a CLUNK, I am 95% certain that your radius arm support has cracked. That is what those '95 to '98 model year Windstars were famous for. To repair, would require removing the radius arm rubber bushings from where it contacts the subframe, and MIG welding it. This is probably the reason you would find a MIG welder beside the alignment rack at most Ford stores.

If it is a TAPPING type sound, look for loose front stabilizer end links as the source of your noise. This particular vehicle uses the ball socket type end link that wears out the way a tie rod end would. If this is the case, go to your local Ford dealer to replace BOTH sway bar links. The replacement end links are IDENTICAL to the ones used on 2005 to current model year Mustangs, believe it or not. Just ask the parts guy at the dealer to look up the part number for both. They will be the same. Hope this helps.
