The answer would vary based on what your requirements are ... are you talking about cut flowers? Or flowers in bloom?

For cut flowers, carnations are generally acknowledged to be the longest lasting. The tight arrangement of the petals and the very strong vascular system in the stem allow them to stay 'fresh' in cut arrangements for up to four weeks.

After carnations, flowers such as mums and daises last the longest. If you stick with the types that have the tight petals, sometimes called buttons, they last even longer. Button mums can last for several week. Regular mums and daisies will last for a couple weeks. Avoid getting any mums or daisies referred to as 'spider mums'. These flowers have long, thin petals that will drop after only a couple days.

In general, avoid flowers with long, thin petals (like iris, glads, or roses). Also avoid flowers than have very few petals (like tulips). The more petals and the thicker the stem will help a flower last longer.

(It also doesn't hurt to protect the flower when in a vase. Keep them away from direct sun, hot/cold drafts, and add that little packet of nutrients that comes with the flowers to the water!)
