Hi,I have a 1986 Mercury Cougar with a 3.8 V6 engine what I would like to know if you have the car running win you pull the battery cable off it shouldn't die should it ? The charging light isn't on.I man told me he had a car Cougar that did that I thought if the car dies when you pull the battery cable off it isn't charging Plz help thz.

DO NOT DO THAT. You create surge and the computer and alternator hate that. You can blow out the computer and diodes in the alternator.
That is the worst thing you can. If you want to test it your self, go buy a volt meter and check the voltage while running. I should be a minimum of 13.8 volts and no more than 15.2 volts. Test at the battery.

Although there are other test that require more expensive equipment, this can get you started in testing.
DO NOT remove a battery cable while the engine is running.

Dont do that!!!.....Get a volt meter and check it.....Connect the neg to the neg on the battery and pos to the positive output on the back of the alternator...It should read between 14.4 and 13v no lower

correct. the alternator or voltage regulator is bad. the car should run with the battery disconnected.

thats the easiest way to burn your computor right out, on any computor controlled vehicle this is a NO NO...... as for your question, in older vehicles if its running and you remove the positive battery cable and turn the headlights on and the vehicle stays running the alternator is charging, same would be in effect for newer vehicles but as I said ............
